The Ringing World National Youth Contest is organised by The Ringing World, with the support of volunteers from across the ringing community.
The event is deliberately run by a small team, drawing on local volunteers in the host city and the support of team leaders who bring groups to the contest.
The organising team
The day-to-day organisation of the contest is led by the Contest Organiser, Joanna Cresshull. Jo plans the event, works with the host towers and volunteers, and oversees the running of the day.
Jo is supported by Will Bosworth and the Ringing World office, who assists with entries, communications and general administration.
Rebecca Sugden acts as the liaison between the contest and The Ringing World Board, ensuring that the Board is kept informed and that the event aligns with the charity’s wider aims.
Oversight and governance
The contest is run under the auspices of The Ringing World, whose Board provides overall strategic oversight.
The Board does not run the event itself, but ensures that the contest operates in line with the charity’s objectives and that appropriate policies and procedures are in place.
Responsibilities during the event
While the organising team plans and coordinates the day, the contest depends on the participation and leadership of the teams who attend.
Each team must have a team leader, who is responsible for their team members throughout the day. This includes safeguarding, supervision, welfare, and ensuring that team members follow the instructions of stewards and organisers. Team leaders are generally supported on the day by a group of supporting adults.
Team leaders are therefore asked to ensure that:
- they have appropriate permission from parents or guardians where necessary
- their young ringers and accompanying adults understand the expectations of the day
- they remain responsible for their young ringers throughout the day
The organising team provides the structure of the event and the systems needed to run it safely, but the primary duty of care for young ringers remains with their team leaders.
Safeguarding and safety
The Ringing World takes safeguarding seriously. We operate safeguarding and health and safety procedures appropriate to the event, and volunteers are briefed accordingly.
These arrangements are designed to support a safe and enjoyable day for everyone involved, working in partnership with team leaders and accompanying adults.
